The HardyChrom SS, from Hardy Diagnostics, is a selective chromogenic medium recommended for use as a primary screening medium for isolating and differentiating Salmonella and Shigella spp from stool cultures.

A recent study at the University of Washington School of Medicine found that HardyChrom SS agar combined with MALDI-TOF-mass spectrometry improved the turnaround time for reporting negative results by up to two days and reduced costs associated with stool cultures by almost 50 percent.

With the medium, Salmonella and Shigella can easily be distinguished from nonpathogenic enteric bacteria based on colony color. HardyChrom SS simultaneously detects both while ruling out nonpathogenic enteric bacteria.

The medium differentiates pathogen colonies, reduces the need for secondary testing of isolates, and results in fewer false-positive results. Technologists use less culture media when setting up stool cultures, while reducing turnaround time.
