Thermo Fisher unveils line of NGS instruments, 3/18

March 2018—Thermo Fisher Scientific announced the Ion GeneStudio S5 Series, a line of benchtop next-generation sequencing instruments that provides flexibility and scalability enabled by five Ion S5 chips, including the new Ion 550 chip, on a single platform. Research applications include cancer, inherited disease, and microbial and infectious diseases.

The Ion GeneStudio S5 Series delivers a high level of dynamic range and read lengths of up to 600 base pairs. With the flexible chip format, the platform can accommodate two sequencing runs per day with data analysis, delivering 2–260 million reads and a total output of between .5 Gb and 50 Gb. Flexibility is achieved by switching Ion S5 chips—not sequencers—to match the appropriate throughput requirement. This interchangeable format enables users to cost-effectively process samples in increments, rather than waiting to batch samples.

The series includes the Ion GeneStudio S5, the Ion GeneStudio S5 Plus, and the Ion GeneStudio S5 Prime systems and is designed to integrate with Ion AmpliSeq technology, the Ion Chef System for automated library preparation and amplification, and Ion Torrent downstream bioinformatics and reporting tools.
