August 2014—MALDI Biotyper systems can be configured for further functionality by adding new or expanded research-use only software modules or hardware accessories.

The MBT Explorer module provides multiple bioinformatics approaches for spectra comparison, statistical data interpretation, and the generation of customer-specific reference library entries (main spectra) of strains of special interest. Such sub-libraries can be exported and re-imported in networks of collaborating labs.

The MBT Satellite module allows for paperless setup, and multiple modules can be used for labs with multiple microbiology workbenches.

The MBT Sepsityper module supports the analyses of data generated from positive blood culture samples. The software complements the MALDI Sepsityper kit with streamlined data interpretation.

The MBT STAR-BL module enables patented, functional beta-lactamase testing for selected antibiotics. STAR-BL software monitors the mass shifts introduced by enzymatic degradation of betalactam antibiotics, like some penicillins, third-generation cephalosporins, and carbapenems. These changes are monitored by direct measurements of molecular weights without the need of labeling by probes or antibodies.

The MBT Translator and MBT Integrator modules connect data generated with the MALDI Biotyper to laboratory information systems.

The MBT Pilot is a hardware accessory to support the light-guided preparation of target plates. In combination with the Satellite software, the Pilot allows for a paperless and bar-code-tracked workflow with full traceability. It also guides users during the preparation of plates.

The MBT Galaxy benchtop automation device reduces manual workload during the preparation of sample target plates and introduces quality control steps, like controlled reagent droplet size, controlled drying atmosphere, and quality control of the matrix preparation. The Galaxy standardizes sample preparation with QCs for reagent additions and eliminates the need for manual reagent pipetting, reducing repetitive motions and labor costs associated with target preparation. It is equipped with onboard bar-code reading to connect directly to the MALDI Biotyper server.
